I was given the sensory disorder. I had the opportunity to feel like what it’s like having limited feelings in my hand. What I did to be able to experience it was to be able to cook the entire meal with while wearing oven mitts. The meal that I had chosen to do was macaroni and cheese. I choose this because I’m not much a cook myself and this was one of the few meals, I could do so I thought it would be easy to do it with oven mitts on. I was wrong from the start. It was hard to even get all the ingredients I needed just out of the fridge, especially the butter. Getting all the right ingredients and measuring it was hard to get it to exact with so little control in the hands. Luckily macaroni and cheese doesn’t take the exact measurements for the ingredients so even if I had troubles and didn’t get the measurements right it would still taste okay.
This disorder related to me on a personal level because while it may not be the same thing, but I have struggled with tendinitis in my hands and arms. Being an advanced pianist and involved in many other musical instruments as well it has been difficult to be able to do some of the advanced pieces, I may want to do but can’t because it’s too painful and causes to many problems with my hands.
Doing this sensory disorder has made me feel grateful that I only have tendinitis. Because to some that have the sensory disorder, I can’t imagine how happy they would be with having tendinitis. That just with that they can still do so much more stuff while doing tendinitis, even something as silly as cooking macaroni and cheese.
This disability would affect me even if I was the teacher of a child that had this disorder. It would affect me as a teacher because this child would have trouble writing. Depending on the extent of this disorder that the child would have I would have to accommodate it. But with how advanced technology is now days one way of getting the child to be able to participate is having a child speak into a device like they would if they were to be writing. There’s so much improvement in technology that children especially with this disability could use technology to its advantage. Doing something like this with technology would also help this child be able to participate with the class more because it’s something everyone could do.
This disability would have the biggest effect on the parents. Since its their child, they would have to help them their entire life. Finding accommodations to help the child will always be a challenge. But I believe with today's age everything is always improving and always room to continue to improve. For this reason, each day is becoming easier for children and even people with disability because of all the advanced technology and training we must help everyone to be able to participate and learn.
